Some Love for Shelden

LINK

I want to make one thing perfectly clear.

When the Celtics signed Patrick O'Bryant, I wasn't particularly excited. In fact, I said the best we could hope for was William Bedford. So it's not like I'm a hopelessly tainted Kool-Aider. Having said that, Shelden Williams has much more promise than Patrick O'Bryant. At worst, he's a great Greg Kite type of practice player (Hat Tip to Florida Celts fan). At best, he's Rick Robey with a longer wing-span (though Robey was taller, so between height and wing-span it was pretty much a push). Robey's forte was rebounding and pushing people around. Same for The Landlord. You could argue Robey was more accurate from the floor than Give It To Me, Big Shelden, and you'd be right, depending on which seasons you compared.

But let's see how Shelden does on the floor with some talent around him. I'll give Robey this: he somehow managed to play almost 20 minutes a game in the championship season of 1980-81. He also shot .545 from the field that year. Totally amazing, especially when you look at his field-goal percentage in some of the other years.

Regardless, I'm sticking with the comparison:

Shelden Williams as our fifth big will be comparable to either Greg Kite or Rick Robey. I'm not calling him the Next Charles Oakley. But I'm not calling him William Bedford, either.

Williams hasn't impressed so far but sometimes all it takes is to get into the right system with the right players around you to make a player turn the corner. He does have some potential. Let's hope he reaches it. Who knows. Maybe Big Baby will become the Greg Kite to Shelden.

Big Baby as Greg Kite? Boy, I hope not. I like Big Baby as our fourth big. I wonder if Shelden will actually be our sixth big?

Scal could be big #5.
