K. C. Jones says he thinks Robert Parish, Kevin McHale and Dennis Johnson deserve to be named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team today. The starting teams were announced Sunday (Larry Bird will start with Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Isiah Thomas and Sidney Moncrief for the East), and seven reserves from each conference will be named today. Parish, who's been an All-Star for three straight years, is expected to make the team with ease. McHale has never been an NBA All-Star but is having his best season. DJ is a four-time veteran of the Western Conference team and finished fourth among Eastern guards in the fan voting.
"All three should be there," said Jones, who will coach the East squad. The All-Star reserves are selected by NBA head coaches. Each coach was asked to submit seven names (coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players) yesterday. Jones voted for Philadelphia's Andrew Toney, Cleveland's World B. Free, New Jersey's Otis Birdsong, Atlanta's Dan Roundfield, New York's Bernard King, Washington's Jeff Ruland and Detroit's Bill Laimbeer.
"It's not for me to say if I should be on there," says DJ. "My main goal is to win a world championship. If I make the All-Star team I'll be happy, but if not, it'll be nice to take my family on a three-day trip." McHale has already made plans to return to his Hibbing, Minn., home during the break. "I've never really giving much thought to making the team," said McHale. "It's something that's totally out of your control. I know it's an honor and everything, but I'd really like to go home and see my family and do some ice fishing. The lake trout are coming through the ice by now."
